Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin fossorius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin fossorius suitable for digging (a636 in Isidore; < classical Latin foss- , past participial stem of fodere to dig (see fodient adj.) + -ōrius -ory suffix2) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (fǫə·riəs) /fɒˈsɔərɪəs/.
