Etymology: < post-classical Latin tuberculosus of, relating to, or of the nature of a tubercle (tubercle n. 2a; 1542 or earlier), of the nature of a tubercle, having tubercles (tubercle n. 1) (1703 or earlier; from 1763 as a specific name) < classical Latin tūberculum tubercle n. + -ōsus -ous suffix, after ancient Greek ϕυματώδης full of tumours (Hippocrates, Galen).
