Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymon: French patelette.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Middle French patelette textile ribbon (1491; 1344 in sense ‘metal clasp’; French †patellette head-piece of a bridle (in patellette de la testiere , 1611 in Cotgrave), patelette , pattelette flap cover of a haversack (1765)) < patte short band of cloth attached to clothes for trimming or fastening (1416 in this sense: see patte n.) + -lette , diminutive suffix (see -let suffix), but the semantic development is unclear. Compare slightly later partlet n.2 N.E.D. (1904) interpreted the following quot. as a later instance of the word, but this seems unlikely (see Sc. National Dict. s.v. paitlich, where it is interpreted as meaning ‘favourite, cherished’):1794 Har'st Rig lxxxvi. 28 They sair bemane some paitlich gown.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
A garment worn over the neck and upper part of the chest, esp. by women; = partlet n.2
