Etymology: < the name of a parish in Argyllshire, where are the lead mines in which the mineral was discovered.
(Originally †strontian earth, strontian lime, strontian mineral, strontian spar.) Properly, native strontium carbonate, but more commonly applied loosely to strontia, sometimes to strontium. Not now in scientific use. †strontian water = strontia water: see strontia n. strontian yellow: a yellow colour produced by adding potassium chromate to a solution of a strontium salt.
