Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μανδύας woollen cloak (in ancient Greek in form μανδύης in a fragment of Aristophanes), in Byzantine Greek (from 9th cent.) in sense ‘monk's cloak’; probably a loanword: regarded by ancient authors as either a Persian or a Liburnian (Illyrian) word.

Orthodox Church.

A black woollen cloak worn by monks; (also) an episcopal vestment resembling a cope.

1991 Oxf. Dict. Byzantium 1282/1 Mandyas,..came to designate the long, dark, plain cloak worn over the monastic tunic... The episcopal mandyas may be more elaborate, with embroidered panels at its four corners.
