Etymology: < German spektrometer or French spectromètre. Compare French spectrométrie (1872).Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: specˈtrometer.
An instrument used for measuring the index of refraction. Now in extended use, any of a wide range of instruments for producing spectra and measuring the positions, etc., of spectral features. Cf. mass spectrometer n.
