Etymology: Probably < French anémo- (in e.g. anémoscope anemoscope n.) and its etymon post-classical Latin anemo- (in e.g. anemographia anemography n., anemoscopium : see anemoscope n.) < ancient Greek ἀνεμο- , combining form (in e.g. ἀνεμοτρεϕής fed by the wind) < ἄνεμος wind < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin animus animus n.Attested from the late 17th cent. in borrowings and adaptations of French and Latin words, earliest in anemoscope n. and slightly later in anemometer n., both of which may also have Italian models. Independent formations within English are found from at least the early 19th cent. (compare anemocracy n.). Chiefly combining with words of Latin and Greek origin, although compare anemovane n. Compare French anémo-, Italian anemo- (formations in both of which are found from at least the 17th cent.), Spanish anemo- (formations in which are found from at least the 19th cent.).
