Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Anelectrotonus.
Etymology: < German Anelectrotonus ( E. F. W. Pflüger Untersuchungen über die Physiologie des Electrotonus (1859) 186) < an- (in Anode anode n.) + Electrotonus electrotonus n. Compare catelectrotonus n. Compare also anelectrotonic adj.Quot. 1862 translates a passage from Pflüger's book in the context of a review.
Physiology.
Originally: a state of diminished excitability occurring in the part of a nerve or nerve fibre attached to the positive electrode when the nerve is stimulated by having an electric current passed through it. In later use also: hyperpolarization resulting from electrotonus. Contrasted with catelectrotonus n. Cf electrotonus n.

1862 tr. E. F. W. Pflüger in Brit. & Foreign Medico-chirurg. Rev. 30 12 A given tract of nerve is irritated by the constitution of katelectrotonus and the disappearance of anelectrotonus, but not by the disappearance of katelectrotonus and the constitution of anelectrotonus [Ger. des Anelectrotonus].
1872 A. Flint Physiol. Man IV. iii. 116 Near the anode, the excitability of the nerve is diminished, and this condition has been called anelectrotonus.
1877 M. Foster Text Bk. Physiol. i. ii. 55 The polarizing current had been an ascending one.., so as to throw x into anelectrotonus.
1921 Proc. Royal Soc. B. 92 346 The damage to the nerve appears to be the cause of continuous stimulation, which induces without any external stimulus, a weak tetanus, which is either augmented or depressed by the onset of catelectrotonus or anelectrotonus.
2006 Progress Neurobiol. 78 175/1 When subliminally depolarized, these neurons were envisioned as current sources, causing hyperpolarization (anelectrotonus) in motoneurons.
