Etymology: The normal Middle English representation of Old English blác < Germanic *blaiko-z , < the stem of blîkan , blaik to shine. But the Old English blæc , black n. had also a long-vowel form blāc- , which would also give Middle English bloke ; and in the few known instances it is difficult to say which is the sense. Compare blake adj.
