Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plāga.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin use of classical Latin plāga blow, stroke, wound, gash, either < ancient Greek πληγή (Doric πλᾱγά ) blow, stroke ( < a variant of the Indo-European base of πλήσσειν to strike), or a parallel formation < the base of classical Latin plangere (see plangent adj.), both Latin and Greek verbs deriving ultimately < the same Indo-European base as flaw n.2Probably not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D.(1907) gives only the pronunciation (plēi·gă) /ˈpleɪɡə/.
Entomology. rare.
A stripe, streak, or elongated patch of colour.
