Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plakula.
Etymology: < German Plakula (O. Bütschli 1883, in Morphol. Jahrb. 9 419) < ancient Greek πλάκ- , πλάξ tablet, plate (see placo- comb. form) + German -ula -ule suffix.
Zoology.
A disc-shaped embryo, occurring as a developmental stage in urochordates and some sponges; a hypothetical primitive metazoan resembling this.
