Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Placozoa.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Placozoa, phylum name (K. G. Grell 1971, in Naturwissensch. Rundschau 24 160/2) < placo- placo- comb. form + -zoa -zoa comb. form.
Zoology.
With plural agreement: animals belonging to a minor phylum of tiny marine invertebrates which are the most primitive metazoans known, having a flattened body lacking bilateral symmetry and made up of two cell layers; placozoans. Also (occasionally) with singular agreement: this phylum.
