Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin secūri-.
Etymology: < classical Latin secūri-, combining form (in e.g. secūrifer : see securifer n. ) of secūris axe ( < secāre to cut: see secant adj.); compare -i- connective.The formation of classical Latin secūris is obscure, but may be paralleled in Old Church Slavonic sekyra axe. Found in the 17th cent. in securiferous , and subsequently in a small number of borrowings and adaptations of Latin words, earliest in the 18th cent. in securiform adj., and becoming more numerous from the mid 19th cent.
Used with the sense ‘of an axe or hatchet’, chiefly in various scientific terms indicating the presence of an organ or part resembling or likened to a hatchet. See also securiform adj.
