Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian oboe d'amore.
Etymology: < Italian oboe d'amore, lit. ‘oboe of love’ (probably first half of the 18th cent.) < oboe oboe n.1 + di of + amore (see amoretto n.). Compare German Liebesoboe.In plural form oboi d'amore after the Italian plural form. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (ō·boe damō·re) /ˈoboe daˈmore/.
Music.
A mezzo-soprano oboe with a pear-shaped bell and a pitch a minor third below that of the ordinary oboe.
