Etymology: < Rumelia, the name of a region in the Balkan peninsula ( < Ottoman Turkish Rūmili , Rūmeli (Turkish Rumeli ), literally ‘province of the Greeks’ < rūm inhabitant of the Byzantine Empire, Greek ( < Arabic rūm : see Roumi n.) + il province + -i , suffix marking the last element of a compound; > medieval Greek Ῥούμελη (modern Greek Ρούμελη )) + -an suffix. Compare French roumélien , noun (1631 or earlier as †romelien ; also as adjective). Compare later Rumeliot adj., Rumeliot n.The source cited in quot. 1756 at sense A. is translated from an unpublished Latin manuscript which has not been traced. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) also gives the pronunciation (rume·liăn) /ruːˈmɛlɪən/.

Of, relating to, or belonging to Rumelia, a region in the Balkan peninsula formerly ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Cf. Rumeliot adj.In former Ottoman use, Rumelia was applied to roughly the whole region under Turkish rule south of the Balkan Mountains, east of the Adriatic, and north of the Peloponnese; in later more general use, it referred to approximately the regions of ancient Macedonia and Thrace, or to Thrace alone.
