单词 auguste
释义

Augusten.

Brit. /ɔːˈɡuːst/, /aʊˈɡuːst/, /ɔːˈɡʌst/, /ˈaʊɡʊst/, U.S. /ˌɔˈɡəst/, /ˌɑˈɡəst/
Forms: 1900s– August, 1900s– Auguste. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: French auguste; German August.
Etymology: < (i) French auguste (1889 or earlier), generic use of the male forename Auguste ( < classical Latin Augustus : see August n.), and its probable etymon (ii) German August (1881 or earlier in the regional (Berlin) form Aujust, in dummer Aujust, lit. ‘stupid August’, the name of a comic circus character). There is some evidence to link the invention of the Auguste type of clown to Tom Belling (1834–1900), who worked as a clown in both Germany and France in the late 19th cent. and who used the name August or Auguste, but unambiguous documentary evidence is lacking. For a full discussion see J. Davison Clown: Readings in Theatre Practice (2013) 65–86.
A type of clown, now generally characterized as wearing grotesque facial make-up (typically featuring red or pink, and usually a red artificial nose), a fright wig or similarly wild hair, and badly-fitting or oversized clothes and shoes. In the early 20th century the Auguste type of clown had a less grotesque appearance, and was characterized more in terms of behaviour, this being clumsy or chaotic, often in contrast to a more subdued white-faced fellow clown. The later grotesque appearance was originally associated with Albert Fratellini (1886–1961).
