The Augustinian canons (more formally Canons Regular of St Augustine: see canon n.2 1) became firmly established as a religious order in the late 11th cent. The Augustinian friars (more formally the Order of Hermits of St Augustine or Order of St Augustine) were established in 1256 by an amalgamation of various earlier smaller groupings of friars.
