Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Afrikaans rooibos; Dutch rooibosch.
Etymology: < Afrikaans rooibos (in both senses 1 and 2, in the latter sense short for rooibostee rooibos tea) and its etymon South African Dutch rooibosch < rooi red (see rooibok n.) + bosch bush n.1 With sense 2 compare later redbush n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1e(d).
1. South African. Any of several shrubs or small trees of the genus Combretum (family Combretaceae), bearing red or yellow foliage in winter; esp. C. apiculatum, which is native to central and southern Africa and has spikes of scented yellow flowers. Also: †the wood of any of these trees (obsolete).
