Etymology: < Galam, the name of a former kingdom and a trading post on the Senegal river (see note) + butter n.¹ Compare French beurre de Galam (a1802 or earlier).The kingdom of Galam was situated on both sides of the central Senegal river; a map of 1707 shows it directly to the east of the Fulah kingdom. The name was also applied to the French fortification and trading post of Saint-Joseph de Galam (constructed in 1698), and it is often unclear whether the kingdom or the fort is meant. Along with most of the river valley, Galam was ceded to the British Empire in 1763 and returned to France in 1783.
