galangan.Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French galanga; Latin galanga. Etymology: < Old French, Middle French, French galanga (1298), Middle French, French †galange (1536; also 1611 in Cotgrave as †galangue ) and its etymon post-classical Latin galanga (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources (also as galenga , galinga ); 9th cent. as gallingar ) < Arabic ḵalanjān (see galangal n.). Compare Byzantine Greek γάλαγγα , Catalan †galenge (14th cent.), †galange (1617; now galanga ), Spanish galanga (1495), Portuguese galanga (15th cent. as †galangua , 1516 as †galãga , 1548 as †gualagua ), Italian galanga (c1300), Middle Dutch galiga , galange , galanga (late 13th cent.). Compare earlier galangal n.Quot. 1340 could alternatively be taken as showing an (otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman parallel. The following apparently shows a borrowing of a distinct but related Middle Dutch word:1387 in A. H. Thomas Cal. Plea & Mem.
