Etymology: < g- (in glycine n.) + alan- (in alanine n.) + -in suffix1 (see quot. 1983).
Physiology.
A neuropeptide involved in the regulation of various physiological functions, notably appetite for fatty foods.

1983 K. Tatemoto et al. in FEBS Lett. 164 124/2 We report here the isolation, amino acid sequence and some of the biological activities of this novel peptide amide which we have designated galanin from the N- and C-terminal residues, glycine and alanine.
1998 J. Panksepp Affective Neurosci. ix. 181 Recently it has been found that galanin can selectively increase fat appetite.
2003 Toronto Metro 30 Jan. 18/2 As people put on weight, they become more resistant to the hormone leptin, which is strongly linked to weight and appetite, and a brain peptide called galanin that stimulates eating.
