Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French romancé, romancer.
Etymology: < French romancé (1840), use as adjective of past participle of romancer romance v. Compare vie romancée n. at vie n.1 Compounds. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (romaṅse) /rɔmɑ̃se/. The use of the form romancée in quot. 1962 appears to be due to the feminine gender of French biographie biography n.
