Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item, partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Middle Low German lexical item. Etymon: ah int.
Etymology: Ultimately imitative (probably originally of the sound of a sigh), partly (chiefly in Scotland) as a variant of ah int., and partly after (or in some cases perhaps < ) Middle Dutch, Dutch ach, Middle Low German ach, German ach (Middle High German ach ), all expressing sentiments ranging from strong regret to (especially in later use) mild emphasis. Compare och int.In quot. 1781 representing the speech of a Jewish character in a comedy; perhaps after Yiddish akh ( < German). In quot. 1816 representing the speech of a German character, and in quot. 1986 apparently representing a character speaking German. Used in American regional English in areas historically of German settlement.
Expressing surprise, annoyed dismissal or disregard, irritation, regret, etc. Cf. ah int. and n., och int.Chiefly in representations of accents which incorporate strongly aspirated sounds, esp. Scottish, Irish, and some Germanic languages. Also South African as an earlier form of ag int. (see quots. 1833, 1892).
