Etymology: < French Rilsan (1951 in the article of which quot. 1951 is a summary, or earlier), apparently < ri- (in ricin castor oil plant (c1466; < classical Latin ricinus ricinus n.¹)), with apparently arbitrary extension (although perhaps compare earlier Elsan n. and also -an suffix).

A proprietary name for: any of various varieties of nylon made from castor oil, typically used in protective coatings.
