Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French massier.
Etymology: < French massier (although only attested from 1886 in this sense; 1775 in unrelated nautical use) < masse funds (of a group, society) (1669: see mass n.2) + -ier -ier suffix.
Now historical.
A student elected from among those at a French artist's studio to be the treasurer, administrator, and supervisor of the group.
