单词 massicot
释义

massicotn.

Brit. /ˈmasᵻkɒt/, U.S. /ˈmæsəˌkɑt/
Forms:

α. late Middle English–1700s masticote, 1500s mastecott, 1500s– masticot, 1600s masticoate, 1600s masticut, 1700s masticoat.

β. 1500s maskett, 1600s– massicot, 1700s masicot.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French massicot.
Etymology: < Middle French, French massicot (although only recorded from 1480; also marcicotte (1501)), probably indirectly < Arabic martak or Persian martak litharge, perhaps via (unattested) post-classical Latin forms with scribal misinterpretation of the Arabic script. The French word has been derived < Italian marzacotto marzacotto n., but it is more likely that the latter merely influenced the former phonologically, in view of the semantic difference between the two. The α. forms in English are perhaps influenced by mastic n. (and adj.) (compare the isolated Middle French form masticot (1535)).
The yellow, orthorhombic form of lead monoxide as it occurs naturally, used as a pigment. Cf. litharge n. 1.
