Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Massicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Massicus of or belonging to Mount Massicus, the name of a mountain in Campania (Latin Mons Massicus, Italian Monte Massico), famous for the quality of its wine. As noun after classical Latin Massicum, use as noun of neuter of Massicus (in e.g. vinum Massicum). Compare Middle French, French Massique (1584).In form Massique in quot. 1638 at sense A. perhaps remodelled after French Massique.

Designating a wine produced in ancient times at Monte Massico in Campania, Italy, and much praised by Roman poets. Cf. Falernian adj.The type of grape is unknown.
