Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. renopelvic Brit. /ˌriːnə(ʊ)ˈpɛlvɪk/, U.S. /ˌrinoʊˈpɛlvɪk/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin rēnēs , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin rēnēs (plural) kidneys (see reins n.) + -o- connective. Compare reni- comb. form.Found in a small number of formations (all medical and scientific terms) from the first half of the 19th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin.
Forming terms with the senses ‘of or relating to a kidney’ or ‘renal and ——’.
