Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mauvaise honte.
Etymology: < French mauvaise honte (a1680) < mauvaise , feminine of mauvais bad (see mauvasty n.) + honte shame (see hontous adj.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (movęz oṅt) /movɛz ɔ̃t/.
False shame or modesty. Also: extreme or unreasonable diffidence; painful shyness.
