Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mauvais ton.
Etymology: < French mauvais ton (1784, but probably earlier) < mauvais bad (see mauvasty n.) + ton ton n.3Mauvais ton functions grammatically in English as a predicative adjective, although semantically it can be analysed (as in French) as a noun phrase. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (movę toṅ) /movɛ tɔ̃/.
Unacceptable in certain circles or polite society.
