Etymology: < re- prefix + baptize v., after post-classical Latin rebaptizare (3rd cent.) and Middle French, French rebaptiser (13th cent. in Old French).

a. transitive. Christian Church. To baptize (a person) again. Also intransitive.Frequently with reference to the view, held by St Cyprian and opposed by Pope Stephen I, that those baptized by heretics should be baptized again before being admitted to the Church.
