Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymon: French palet.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration (with omission of the ending and reduplication) of French palet a smooth round stone or piece of metal thrown in games like quoits (1306 in Old French) < pale (see palette n.) + -et -et suffix1. With the β. forms compare -y suffix6. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pălɑ·l) /pəˈlɑːl/.
Chiefly Scottish, English regional (northern), and Irish English (northern).
Frequently in plural with singular agreement. The game of hopscotch. Also: the stone used in the game.
