Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Kannada. Or (ii) a borrowing from Telugu. Etymons: Kannada pallavi; Telugu pallavi.

Etymology: Either < Kannada pallavi refrain, or < Telugu pallavi refrain < Sanskrit pallavī , nominative singular of pallavin having shoots, sprouting < pallava shoot, extension. Compare anupallavi n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the pronunciation (păla·vi) /pəˈlɑːvi/. The form pallevi is after the Telugu pronunciation.

Indian Music.

In Carnatic music: the first section or dominant theme of a song, which may be repeated several times. Cf. anupallavi n.
