Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pallas.
Etymology: < the name of Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811), German naturalist, best known for his studies of the fauna of the Russian empire.Pallas's warbler was described (in the genus Motacilla) in Zoographia Rosso-Asiatica (1811) I. 499 (M. proregulus) and 509 (M. certhiola). Pallas's cat was described by Pallas in Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs in einem Ausführlichen Auszuge III. (1776) 692; the fish eagle (see sense 3) was described in the same work, I. (1771) 454.
1. Pallas's warbler n. (a) (also Pallas' warbler, Pallas's leaf warbler, Pallas's willow warbler) a very small warbler, Phylloscopus proregulus (family Sylviidae), native to central Asia with predominantly olive-green plumage and a pale crown stripe; (b) (more commonly Pallas's grasshopper warbler) a small warbler, Locustella certhiola (family Sylviidae), native to central and eastern Asia and resembling the grasshopper warbler L. naevia, with predominantly olive-brown plumage but white-tipped tail feathers and a brownish rump.
