Etymology: < ravish v. + -er suffix1, probably after Anglo-Norman ravisour, ravisseur, ravissor, ravissour, ravissur, ravisur and Middle French ravisseur (compare Old French ravisor, ravisseor, ravisserre; French (now archaic or literary) ravisseur) plunderer, despoiler (end of the 12th cent. in Old French as ravisor), abductor (of another person, especially a woman) (end of the 13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman), rapist, violator (late 14th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman).
Now somewhat archaic.
