alkitrann.

Brit. /ˈalkᵻtrən/, U.S. /ˈælkətrən/
Forms: Middle English alkaran (perhaps transmission error), Middle English alkatran, Middle English 1700s–1800s alketran, 1600s alchitra, 1600s alkitrum, 1600s– alkitran, 1700s–1800s alchitram, 1700s–1800s alchitran, 1700s–1800s alchytran, 1700s–1800s alkitram, 1700s–1800s alkytran, 1800s alchitrum.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French alketran; Latin alquitranum.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Anglo-Norman alketran, alktran, Middle French alkitran, alquitran liquid resin which flows from fir trees, also mineral pitch, bitumen (end of the 13th cent. or earlier in Old French) < Spanish alquitrán (a1250) < Arabic al-qaṭrān and its variant al-qiṭrān < al the + qaṭrān and its variant qiṭrān resin of fir trees, pitch, tar, of uncertain origin, probably a loanword < another Semitic language (perhaps < Aramaic ʿiṭrān ‘kind of resin’, which is etymologically related, although its different initial consonant poses phonological problems; compare also Arabic qaṭara to drip)); and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin alquitranum (from late 13th cent. in Spanish sources; first half of the 13th cent. in Spanish sources as alquitra ), alchitran (1363 in Chauliac), alchitram (from 14th cent. in British glossarial sources), alkitrum (1634 in the passage translated in quot. 1658) < Arabic al-qiṭrān . Compare Old Occitan alquitran (13th cent.), Portuguese alcatrão (14th cent. as alcadrã ). Compare also ( < the Arabic ulterior etymon without preceding definite article) Old Occitan, Occitan quitran (1376), Catalan quitrà (1341), Italian catrame (early 14th cent.), Old French catran (1195; Old French, Middle French goutren (1309), Middle French goutran , French goudron , †goudran , of uncertain phonological development, perhaps resulting from association with goutte drop: see gout n.1). Compare later alchitrean n.It is unclear whether the following earlier quots. should be taken as showing the Middle English, the Latin, or the Anglo-Norman word:a1400 J. Mirfield Sinonoma Bartholomei (1882) 9 Alchitram, pix.a1400 J. Mirfield Sinonoma Bartholomei (1882) 10 Alquitran, pix liquida.
Chiefly historical, with reference to classical writers.
Any of various resins, oils, and pitch-like substances with a practical use (see also some of the 18th- and 19th-cent. quots.); spec. (a) mineral pitch, native asphalt; (b) the resin from trees such as pine and cedar.
