Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alkermès.
Etymology: < Middle French, French alkermès scarlet grain formed by the dried bodies of scale insects found in the Mediterranean region on the kermes oak (1546: see sense 1), medicinal preparation containing these insects (1575: see sense 1), Italian liqueur coloured red with kermes (1797: see sense 2), apparently < Spanish alquermes (although this is first attested slightly later: 1555) < Arabic al-qirmiz < al the + qirmiz kermes n. Compare Catalan alquermes (1460), Portuguese alquermes (1601), Italian alchermes (1567 in sense 1, a1712 in sense 2). Compare later kermes n.In β. forms perhaps influenced by alchemy n.

The dried bodies of scale insects (females of Kermes ilicis and K. vermilio, family Kermesidae), found in the Mediterranean region on the kermes oak ( Quercus coccifera) and formerly used medicinally and as a source of red dye; a medicinal preparation containing these insects, esp. confection of alkermes. Cf. kermes n. 1. Now historical.The insect bodies were formerly referred to as berries or grains. confection of alkermes n. a medicinal preparation of such insects with rose water, sugar, oil of cinnamon, and sometimes other ingredients.
