Etymology: < quadri- comb. form + ancient Greek ἆθλον contest (see athlete n.), after pentathlon n., decathlon n., etc.The word is a hybrid formation, combining a first element ultimately of Latin origin with a second element ultimately of Greek origin, and was perhaps deliberately coined in distinction to earlier tetrathlon n., which usually denotes a different set of four sporting events.
