Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Nisan; Hebrew Nīsān.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Nisan (Vulgate) and its etymon Hebrew Nīsān (Esther 3:7; in the Pentateuch called ābīb Abib n.) < Akkadian nisannu(m) first fruits, name of the first Babylonian month (both senses attested in the Old Babylonian period), ultimately < Sumerian nisag̃ first fruits.
Judaism.
In the Jewish calendar: the first month of the religious year and seventh of the civil year, usually coinciding with parts of March and April. Cf. Abib n.
