Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish níspero.
Etymology: < Spanish níspero medlar tree (see naseberry n.).In American Spanish a distinction is sometimes made between níspero, the medlar (Mespilus germanica), and níspera, the sapodilla.
Any of several trees resembling the medlar tree, or which produce fruits resembling the medlar; spec. (a) any of various tropical American trees of the genus Manilkara, esp. the sapodilla, M. zapota; (b) the loquat or Japanese medlar, Eriobotrya japonica. Also: the fruit or timber of such a tree.
