Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Niçart.
Etymology: < French Niçart, nissard, nissart (1607 in sense ‘inhabitant of Nice’ in form †Niçars , plural) < Occitan niçard (adjective) of Nice, (noun) inhabitant of Nice, dialect of Nice < the name of the city of Nice (see Nice n.2) + -ard -ard suffix. Compare Italian nizzardo (noun) inhabitant or native of Nice (a1861; 1660 or earlier as adjective in sense ‘of Nice’), Catalan niçard (1435 as the name of a type of ship; 1243 in a Latin source in plural as nizardi).
