Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nisi.
Etymology: < classical Latin nisi unless < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + , conditional particle (see si quis n.). Compare nisi prius n.The phrases ‘rule nisi’, ‘order nisi’, and ‘decree nisi’ refer to an interlocutory injunction of the English Chancery Court (subsequently, the Chancery Division of the High Court), or the equivalent court in other English Law jurisdictions, and are largely (now almost exclusively) used in connection with divorce proceedings: see note at decree nisi at decree n. 4b.
Law.
Used as postmodifier. Of a decree, order, rule, etc.: that takes effect after a particular period of time, unless cause be shown within the period why it should not; not final. Also occasionally used predicatively.decree nisi: see decree n. 4b.
