Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Pȳthia; Greek Πυθία.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pȳthia (later adopted into scientific Latin as genus name Pythia (P. French Röding in J. F. Bolten Museum boltenianum (1798) ii. 105)) and its etymon ancient Greek Πυθία the priestess of Apollo at Delphi, use as noun (short for Πυθία ἱέρεια Pythian priestess) of feminine of Πύθιος (adjective) Delphic (see Pythian n.). Compare French Pythie (1546, Rabelais). Compare also earlier pythoness n., Pythonissa n.
1. Greek History. The priestess of Apollo at Delphi (see Delphian adj.), by whom the oracular pronouncements were delivered; the Delphic oracle; (also more generally) any oracle.
