Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French mougnon, moignon.
Etymology: < French †mougnon piece of armour that covers the shoulder (1587 or earlier in Middle French: see 1587 below), †moignon (see quot. 1659), apparently a spec. application of moignon , †mougnon stump of an amputated limb (c1200 in Old French; probably ultimately < a Romance base with sense ‘stump’: see Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at *munno-). Compare Italian †mognoni (plural) piece of armour that covers the upper arm only, from the elbow to the shoulder (1621 or earlier: see 1621 below).The earliest Middle French and Italian attestations each show slightly different senses:1587 F. de la Noue Discours Politiques & Militaires 286 Au bras gauche..un grand gantelet..au droit un petit mougnon qui cache seulement l'espaule.1621 B.
