Forms: 1500s priapiste, 1500s pryapyste, 1500s (Scottish) 1800s– priapist. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Partly a borrowing from Greek. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Greek Πριαπιστής ; Priapus n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: Originally < Hellenistic Greek Πριαπιστής worshipper of Priapus (recorded in plural, Πριαπισταί ) < Πρίαπος Priapus n. + -ιστής -ist suffix. In later use probably re-formed independently < Priapus n. + -ist suffix.
A lascivious person (typically a man); a lecher. Also (implied in quot. 1897): †a worshipper of Priapus (obsolete rare).
