Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Okenit.

Etymology: < German Okenit (as Ockenit , F. von Kobell 1828, in Archiv f. die gesammte Naturlehre 14 333, and subsequently altered by him to Okenit in Characteristik der Mineralien (1830) I. 188) < the name of Lorenz Oken (1779–1851), German naturalist + -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A triclinic hydrous silicate of calcium occurring as minute needle- or blade-shaped crystals of a whitish colour in vesicles in eruptive rocks. Cf. dysclasite n. Also: the mineral wollastonite, misidentified as a form of okenite (see quot. 1993) (rare, now historical).
