Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Okazaki.
Etymology: < the name of Reiji Okazaki (1930–75), Japanese molecular biologist, leader of the research team that first described the fragments in 1968 ( Proc. National Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 59 598).
Molecular Biology.
attributive. Designating the segments of DNA formed as intermediates in the discontinuous replication of the lagging strand during the replication of double-stranded DNA.

1968 Sci. Amer. Aug. 43/1 A major topic at the Cold Spring Harbor meeting was the significance of ‘Okazaki fragments’, short fragments of DNA first found in normally growing bacterial cells by R. Okazaki of Nagoya University.
1975 Nature 4 Sept. 76/3 The synthesis of new DNA strands during the process of DNA duplication seems to occur in rather short sections (now known to everyone as ‘Okazaki pieces’).
1984 E. Holtzman & A. B. Novikoff Cells & Organelles (ed. 3) iv. ii. 531 The lagging strand is produced in initially discontinuous stretches (named ‘Okazaki fragments’) thought to be a few hundred nucleotides long in eucaryotes and five or ten times longer in procaryotes.
2000 Proc. National Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 97 12679/1 The leading strand is synthesized continuously but the lagging strand discontinuously in short Okazaki fragments 1–2 kb in length.
