单词 oke
释义

oken.1

Brit. /əʊk/, U.S. /oʊk/
Forms:

α. 1500s hoccha, 1600s oquea, 1600s oquies (plural), 1600s–1800s 2000s– okka, 1600s– oka Brit. /ˈəʊkə/, U.S. /ˈoʊkə/, 1800s ocha.

β. 1600s–1700s oque, 1600s– oke, 1800s okk.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French hoccha, oquea, oque.
Etymology: < Middle French hoccha (1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1585 at α. ), French †oquea (1628 in the passage corresponding to quot. 1653 at α. in the French translation of this text), oque (1653; also 1665 in the passage translated in quot. 1687 at β. ), †okka (1675 in the passage translated in quot. 1677 at α. ), †ocque (1723) < Turkish okka , of uncertain origin. Compare Italian occa (14th cent. as †oca ), Portuguese †oquea (1614 in the passage translated in quot. 1653 at α. ), oca (1873).The received etymology was < Arabic ūqiyya , apparently ultimately (via Aramaic u(n)qiya ) < ancient Greek οὐγκία < classical Latin uncia ounce n.1 Redhouse clearly did not accept that the name of a weight of at most a few ounces could come to mean a weight of nearly 3 lbs.: compare:1890 J. W. Redhouse Turkish & Eng. Lexicon at Uqiyye 1. A weight of..about one ounce. 2. A weight of..about four and one half ounces. The Turkish word okka (2.83 lbs.) is supposed to be derived from this word.
In the Ottoman Empire and subsequently in Turkey and certain other successor states: a unit of weight and capacity, varying in size from place to place, but in later use equal to 1.2829 kg and litres (approx. 2.8 lb or 2.2 pints). When the metric system was introduced (though its use was not enforced) in the 1870s, the kilogram was called yeni okka ‘the new oke’. The Empire's successor states all use the metric system, but the term okka is still heard among villagers in parts of Anatolia, notably in the province of Malatya. It was also used in Cyprus after the introduction of the metric system, but seems to have died out by the late 1980s except in proverbs and sayings.
