Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: predial n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < predial n. + -ist suffix, after German Prädialist (1754 in the passage translated in quot. 1762), itself after Hungarian praedialista.The equivalent term in Hungarian is egyházi nemes noble person who has received land from the Church < egyházi of the church ( < egyház church + -i, suffix forming adjectives) + nemes noble person. The church used to give land to nobility with the explicit purpose of obtaining in return protection for the church itself against attacks and any kind of danger.
rare (historical in later use).
In Hungary: a member of a class or order of landholders who have received land from the Church.
