Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin īdem, faciendus.
Etymology: < classical Latin īdem the same (see idem n.) + faciendus to be made (see faciendum n.). Compare idemfacient adj., idemfactor n. N.E.D. (1899) gives only the pronunciation (əidemfēi·ʃiend) /aɪdɛmˈfeɪʃ(ɪ)ɛnd/.
Mathematics. rare. Now historical.
In the terminology of B. Peirce: designating a quantity which has the property of remaining unchanged when operated on by another quantity.

1870 B. Peirce in Amer. Jrnl. Math. (1881) 4 104 When an expression used as a factor in certain combinations overpowers the other factors and is itself the product, it may be called an idemfactor. When in the production of such a result it is the multiplier, it is idemfacient, but when it is the multiplicand it is idemfaciend.
1904 Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 5 512 The nomenclature employed by Peirce will be followed... If BA = A, A is idemfaciend with respect to B.
